When: Wednesday, July 14th @ 6:30pm
Where: Le Peoples Bank of Oxford @ intersection of Rt. 41 & Old Baltimore Pike in Avondale, Pennsylvania
Who: Bunion Butt & Some Other Hare
Why: The start is only 6 miles north of Hockessin, much closer than you might think. Don't be afraid of leaving Delaware. Excuse my (badly translated) French, but si ces Franais paresseux dgotants peuvent obtenir outre de leur ne et orage la bastille, alors vous des hashers paresseux dgotants pouvez obtenir outre de votre ne et orage Avondale.
D'Erections:
From Wilmington and/or New Jersey: Take Limestone Road north to Rt. 41. Or pick up Rt. 41 north at Prices Corner. Stay on Rt. 41 North and cross the State Line into Pennsylvania. Stay on Rt. 41 North and go through the following crossroads on the way to Avondale - Newark Rd., Penn Green Rd., and State Rd. Approximately 3/4 mile past State Road, bear left off Rt. 41 immediately before a new Wawa Store. Immediately after the Wawa, turn right into the rear parking lot for The Peoples Bank of Oxford. Park; hash.
Alternate route from Wilmington: Take Rt 202 north into Pennsylvania to Rt. 1. Make a left @ Rt. 1 south (actually west) and travel for about 20 minutes to the Exit for Avondale - Rt. 41. Take Rt. 41 south for about 1 mile to a stop sign at the new Wawa Store. Make a right onto Old Baltimore Pike, then immediately turn right into The Peoples Bank of Oxford. Park; hash.
From Newark:
Take Rt. 896 north into Pennsylvania. Stay on Rt. 896 north through Kemblesville and New London. About 2 miles north of New London, bear right onto Rt. 796 north. Take Rt. 796 north for about 2 miles to a traffic light in Jennersville. The Red Rose Inn is at this intersection. Turn right onto Old Baltimore Pike towards West Grove (If you get to Rt. 1 you've gone too far). Travel about 2 miles to the only traffic light in West Grove, then continue another 1.7 miles toward Avondale to The Peoples Bank of Oxford on your left. The bank is immediately before a new Wawa Store. Turn left into the rear parking lot of the Bank. Park; hash.
Alternate route from Newark:
Take Rt. 72 north, Paper Mill Rd, till it dead ends into Rt. 7, Limestone Rd. Make a left. (Or better yet, take a left onto North Star off of Rt. 72, follow it until it you hit Route 7, take a left, this cuts out some of the Route 7 congestion). See 1st set of Wilmington directions.

This evening we were lucky. With vivid memories of the swampy morass and last week's deluge, about 35 hounds braved another downpour en route to the People's Bank in Avondale, the red light district of suburban Hockessin. Several hounds were heard to mutter, "Morass... morass," not realizing that what they craved is expressed in two words, not one. But the rain stopped as the hounds gathered—pitifully ignorant of the diabolical trail that had been laid by our hare, Bunion Butt. The sheer brutality of this Hash went far above and beyond the rigors faced by the French peasants who had stormed the Bastille on this very date so long ago. After a brief circling-up to introduce three virgins and explain the Hash marks (that had probably been washed away), we zoomed (Hah!!) Down the road and quickly found our way through endless poison ivy patches and into deep shiggy. We were into ankle deep sneaker-sucking mud, thorns, jungle-like underbrush, on up steep and slick hills, through waist high fields of scruffy weeds with stickers and nettles, over "Bob-wire", and into mucky streams. We tootled up and down railroad tracks, skirted corn fields, and upheld our reputation for eager private property trespassing anywhere, anytime. Finally, we got to a desperately needed beer stop where the pause that refreshes was short lived because of an approaching thunderstorm. Note the ominous clouds in the last photo. We fully expected a tornado to develop that would take out a trailer park we had passed. But after almost two hours on trail, we stumbled back to our cars and, with the rain starting to pelt down, we circled-up for the RA's version of the Spanish Inquisition. Down-downs were awarded to the hare, Rose butt ( the famous hashus interruptus), our three cherries, and the recipient of a naming. Sopping wet, we slipped into our cars and drove a couple of miles to a hotsy-totsy housing development out there in the Projects for the Apres. Again, we were lucky the rain had stopped in time for us to chow down, al fresco, with a whole bunch of good pizzas. A memorable Hash, indeed.
